Quebec City Christmas 2026: Markets, Lights and Things to Do

A Quebec City Christmas trip is easy to love because so much of it is free and walkable. From late November, the stone streets of Old Quebec fill with wooden market chalets, strings of lights and choirs, and the main German Christmas Market costs nothing to enter. This guide covers the 2026 dates, hours, the best places to see the lights, and what to book before you go.

Dates, hours and fees come mainly from Destination Québec cité, the official tourism office. Event details can change, so please check the official market websites before you travel.

2026 Dates and Key Facts

The season runs from mid-November to the New Year. The two big markets close just before Christmas Day, so plan your visit for the weeks before December 24.

The Quebec City German Christmas Market

The Quebec City German Christmas Market (Marché de Noël allemand de Québec) is the headline event. It is run by the city's German community and fills Old Quebec with decorated chalets, mulled wine and live shows. Admission is free.

According to the tourism office, the market spreads across six sites close to each other: Place de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, Jardins de l'Hôtel-de-Ville, Place d'Armes, Rue Sainte-Anne, Place d'Youville and the backyard of Holy Trinity Cathedral. A listing on Bonjour Québec counts five sites and about 125 exhibitors, so rely on the official site map once you arrive. The market's own site is noelallemandquebec.com.

How to Plan Your Quebec City Christmas Trip

Decorations start going up in late November and, according to the tourism office, stay lit until mid-January. That means you can see the lights even if you miss the markets.

Where to stay. The tourism office recommends staying inside the city walls or near the Parliament Hill area so you can walk to the market. Hotels in Petit-Champlain and the Old Port are also close: you can climb up to the Upper Town or ride the funicular.

Parking. If you arrive by car and are not staying in Old Quebec, park on the edge of the old town and walk in. Street spots fill quickly on weekends and evenings. Paid lots near the entrances include Place d'Youville and the Marie-Guyart building.

Book early. December weekends are a popular time for markets and holiday events, so reserve hotels and any restaurant dinners well ahead. This is our advice, not an official rule.

Best Places to See Christmas Lights

The official tourism guide names five lit-up areas. Start in the Lower Town at dusk and finish at one of the squares in the Upper Town.

Rue du Petit-Champlain and Place-Royale are described by the tourism office as one of Canada's prettiest pedestrian streets, and from Notre-Dame-des-Victoires church to the end of the street the whole area is decorated.

The Grand Christmas Market for Local Gifts

If you want gifts rather than a festival atmosphere, try Le Grand Marché de Québec. Its Christmas market runs from November 21 to December 24, 2026, and brings together more than 250 food companies, artisans and artists selling local gifts and holiday food. It is open Monday to Friday from 9 AM to 6 PM and on weekends from 9 AM to 5 PM, and entry is free. This market is outside Old Quebec, so allow extra travel time.

Skating, Snow and Winter Fun

Place d'Youville has a skating rink where you can rent skates and glide to music, and the Plains of Abraham offer skating, cross-country skiing and snow sliding, according to the tourism office. After the German market closes, the same squares host the Kaleidoscopes event from December 27 to 31, with theatre, music and visual arts.

The Hôtel de Glace (Ice Hotel) is a winter attraction rather than a Christmas one. The tourism listing says it opens from January to mid-March, with the next overnight season set for January 4 to March 13, 2027. A travel site reports day visits may start on December 26, weather permitting, so check the official listing before planning a trip around it.

Concerts and Holiday Events

The tourism office lists several seasonal events, including a toy parade on November 14, a Mendelssohn Christmas concert on December 12, Handel's Messiah on December 13 and a midnight mass event on December 17 and 18. See the Christmas and holiday season page for the full calendar and ticket details.

What About Christmas Day?

Both big markets finish before December 25, so Christmas Day itself is quiet on that front. The lights stay on, and some restaurants open for the holidays; the tourism office keeps a list of restaurants open during the holidays. Book dinner early and check hours directly.

Quebec City or Montreal for Christmas?

Both cities have markets, but the timing differs. A roundup using official dates says Montreal's Great Christmas Market runs from November 13, 2026 to January 3, 2027, which suits trips after Christmas. Quebec City's German market ends on December 23 but feels like a compact old-town weekend.
